Cardioid-based surround array
Cardioid-based surround array
This microphone system should be used, when you need a very smooth and equal coverage of the soundscape around you. As you might have already guessed, this is mainly for 5.x setups. And it also has a lot of details with the so called "Williams-Star" in common. Please see the "Audio Engineering Society Convention e-Brief Presented at the 131st Convention 2011 October 20–23" for more details.
You might say this setup is similar to a Fukada tree, but it's also different.
In the Fukada Tree, the emphasis on the Decca Tree is more obvious, and there are two "outriggers." This system does not include the two omnidirectional microphones.
But there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't try adding a spaced pair of omnidirectional microphones to it for a more solid bass.
An example of a possible setup (without the outriggers!) may look like this. You may change the size of the array to your needs.

The numbers shown are theoretically correct, but your mileage may vary. And we find it hard to adjust a microphone in an angle of 72° or multiplies of it.
But we found a solution for this, as you may see in this article about the PentaSphere. The answer is a little disk of cardboard with a pentagram. Things can be easy sometimes, you just need to find a good solution.
However, we will provide a tutorial and a shopping list soon. Stay tuned!
