spcmic
spcmic
We've had a piece of "dream gear" for some years, and now it's finally part of our stock. A "spcmic". This is not a typo; it's just the name of the microphone array.
The components that make up this device include 84 MEMS, a printed circuit board, an USB port, and hardware that holds everything in place.
You can use just your cell phone to make great recordings in 5th Order Ambisonic! Yes, you read that correctly: a cell phone and 5OA. Nifty, isn't it?
The technical specifications are impressive. The self-noise is below that of a Neumann U87 ai or an AKG C414 XLII. Always keep in mind: There are 84 MEMS working!
The table below provides a brief comparison of the three microphones mentioned. We choose the best possible numbers each microphone can provide.
| Item | CCIR | Self-noise | Price |
| Neumann U 87 ai | 26 / 23 / 25 dB | 15 / 12 / 14 dB-A | ~ 3,000 € |
| AKG C 414 XL II | 20 dB | 6 dB-A | ~ 900 € |
| spcmic | 12 dB | 3 dB-A | ~2,400 € |
With a diameter of just 17 cm (about the length of an adult male's hand), the spcmic is extremely compact and it is very (!) light also: Just 168 g, without an USB-cable.
