DMS with additional height microphones

DMS with additional height microphones

Imagine this: You're deep in the forest and want to record the sound of the wind brushing through the leaves. Suddenly, a flock of sparrows lands in the tree right above you and starts singing joyfully.
Unfortunately, your DMS is only designed to record sounds in the horizontal plane. Then you look at your handheld recorder and notice its built-in microphones. (Which are actually under the wind jammer on the right!) They're coming to the rescue!
However, these microphones can't get close enough to the DMS, which is inside the blimp (the one in the middle) with the "dead cat" on it. Fortunately, you can fix this minor issue in post-production, by alligning the signals.

In this situation, all you have to do is point the handheld recorder upward and activate the built-in microphones.
Depending on your handheld recorder, you may be able to activate or deactivate channels while recording. If not, you have to stop recording, activate the built-in microphones, and start recording again.

That's essentially what we did. What can we say? It worked!

As you can see in the picture, we had an additional FOA, (on the left) which allowed us to make some comparisons. To be frank, it's not the best solution. However, if things don't go as planned, it's a good option. It's at least 100% better than nothing!

We hope this helps you make great recordings that you wouldn't have been able to make otherwise.
