Hardware
Hardware
When we say hardware, we are generally talking about anything that can be touched by your hands. For example, a microphone stand, a cable, a microphone, a role of gaffa tape ... all is what we call "hardware".
Here we are focusing a little bit on any thing in hardware, but microphones, as they have a special category.
Microphone stands
We use microphone stands mainly for additional or so called support-microphones and almost indoor only. For support microphones it is very common and convenient to have them on a regular microphone stand. You can put them where you need them and no questions asked. But for outdoor recordings, they are too heavy and not flexible enough.
Lighting stands
Lighting stands can also be used for sound recordings. They have some nice advantages, but also some disadvantages.
Their main advantage is that they are lightweight and quite affordable.
Camera tripods
The article aobut camera tripods will provide you with some insides, why this is a great alternative to either lighting or regular microphone stands.
Cable straps, cable ties and gaffa tape
There are a few things we never leave home without when we go to a recording session: cable straps, cable ties, and gaffer tape.
At every recording session, there are situations where you need to quickly secure something. That's where cable ties and cable bands come in handy.
Most of the time, you don't have enough of them with you, but even a few are 100% better than none.
We also always have a large roll of gaffer tape with us.
(Always remember: Gaffa is like the force! It has a light and a dark side and holds the entire universe together!)
If we know that there will be an audience present during the recordings, we have a few rubber mats in the car so that we can safely cover areas where people have to walk over cables.
Backpacks
You may use any backpack you like.
Through practical experience, we discovered that backpacks similar to those used by professional photographers effectively met our needs.
To that end, we have published an additional article on the subject, as there are a number of details that should be taken into consideration.
Handheld recorder
A new handheld recorder hits the market almost every month. This makes it difficult to keep up with them all.
Since our focus is on immersive audio, we look for handheld-recorders with at least four microphone inputs. While other handheld recorders are great, they are not suitable for our purposes. Therefore, we are not focusing on them.
Hand cases
Hand cases protect your sensitive gear. You should alway carry your equipment inside of a solid hand case. There is nothing more expansive than arriving at the gig and your gear is not ready to be used.
