Camera Tripods

Camera Tripods

Camera tripods have the great advantage of being able to adapt flexibly to almost any surface, whether it's a hill, stairs, or other uneven surface.
You may also want to watch the great YouTube video from Marcel of "Free To Use Sounds." about his oppinion about camera tripods for sound recording.

They can typically bear loads of up to 14 kg kilograms and provide remarkable flexibility thanks to the ball joints incorporated, if it is a part of the set.
However, they have one major disadvantage: they are either heavy or expansive.

That's why we only use camera tripods for larger microphone systems, taking advantage of their impressive benefits. We are pleased to take on the extra weight, provided that it ensures the intricate microphone setup remains stable and doesn't topple over, even in windy conditions.

It's always difficult to provide examples because they can quickly become outdated or replaced by an even better model. The best option is to provide you with criteria for choosing the right one for your purposes.

Here are some criteria for choosing a camera tripod for sound recording:

  • What is the weight of your heaviest system? (If you don't know exactly, make an educated guess or check the article "Know Your Gear!")
  • How high above the ground do you want to place your microphone system? For FOA in A-format microphone systems, it should be about the height of your shoulders (rule of thumb).
  • How heavy can the tripod be? Remember: if you're out in the field, every kilogram counts twice! Once for the way to the recording location and once for the way back!
  • Last but not least: What is your budget?

We see the following alternatives:
You can either spend less money and get a heavier tripod, or spend more money and get a lightweight one.

From experience, we've learned that you should always try to get the one with the highest load capacity. If you're outside in a windy area, your wind protection acts as a resistor to the wind, which can significantly increase the load.
Don't underestimate this effect. Just take our word for it. ;-)
