M/S Stereo system with two caridioid microphones
M/S Stereo system with two caridioid microphones
When we first saw this, we couldn't believe it!
How should that work? Just two cardioid microphones facing each other and that's it?
Actually ... yes! At least when it comes down to the recording itself.
The routing in post is not that selfexplaining, but no rocket science either.

Kudos going out to the authors of THE Ambisonic book , Matthias Frank and Franz Zotter. Without their great work, we would have known it either.
What do we have here? Nothing really special. - Just two SDCs mit a cardioid pattern facing each other. The main focus should be on the coincidence of the sound being picked up by the microphones. So one microphone is above the other and the membrances are timely aligned to each other.
Then connect these microphones to your recorder, check the gain and press "record".
While recording it may sound a little bit strange, but if your handheld recorder don't provide a M/S decoding .. that's the way it is.
Back in your studio, you will have to setup the routing as shown above.
And if you look closely, you will see the "W" and the "Y". Does this ring a bell? - Right! AmbiX, but with just two channels, so, there are neither depth nor height information as in a FOA system

Now look at the right side of the picture above.
The "W" and the "Y" will be routed as shown and than you will have a nice stereo playback of your recordings. Nifty, isn't it?
If you like this, please consider buying as a "Ko-Fi". Thank you very much in advance
