Backups are for wimps

Backups are for wimps

This is a common saying in the IT industry that actually means the opposite.

When you return from your recording session, the most important thing you must do is copy the data from your SD cards to your backup facility.

This backup facility may be in the cloud (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive) or on-premises. We recommend against using external USB hard drives.
If you need something to store data on, and you don't have a backup, you could lose all your data. Forever!
Although an external USB drive is better than nothing, it is not the optimal solution. However, when you first start recording, this may be a valid option. In that case, you should take very good care of your backups and mark this particular hard drive accordingly.

We are currently working on a solution that will protect your data against loss while being quite affordable.
Although there are great backup facilities available at online and local stores, they usually come with a significant price tag.

How to do backups

The easiest method is to simply copy the data from the SD cards to your backup device.
However, if you have more time, we recommend renaming the files according to the worldwide standard: UCS. The Universal Category System provides a standard for naming your sound files so that sound library management tools (e.g., Soundly) can recognize and sort them into your sound libraries.

However, this takes additional effort and time.
If you're in a hurry, create a folder and name it something that will help you remember what you've recorded, copy everything into the folder, and come back to it later.

We usually add a text file with some remarks (and pictures, if available) to this folder so that we can easily remember it and put the sound files into the appropriate categories of the UCS.
